It was time for the first real hit out of the season. The Dallas Magpies headed north up 75 to take on the Tulsa Buffaloes! Some boys(Crampo) had to give up their days takings before being permitted into a vehicle for the 4 hour trip North! When we arrived at the ground, Dustin ‘DB’ Brasel and his team were frantically preparing the rain soaked ground before the big match, even brought out the brooms trying to get rid of most for the water. Did a great job too, the ground only had a few pools left but they were deep!
Game started on time, with Tulsa striking first with a quick goal in the first few minutes. Dallas fought back and it was tight tussle with Dallas’s superior accuracy in front of goal winning the first quarter. The evergreen pair Stu and Brenn kept the Tulsa defense providing great targets up forward. Tulsa started the second quarter of strongly but Dallas regained control with the defense led by John Dobbs with a best on ground performance shutting down the Tulsa forwards and initiating the teams drive into the forward line. Dallas dominated the quarter extending its lead by half time. In the third quarter, Tulsa fought back getting within a few goals but the Dallas team rallied, held them off, maintaining their lead into the last quarter. During the last quarter the Dallas strong midfield took control, driving the ball deep into the forward line with the rookie Lachay chiming in with a couple of goals. Dallas sniffed victory and like a rabid dog, went for the jugular finishing victors by 57 points.
Few of the highlights of the game, the effort of Matt in the ruck and his 80 meter(you Americans work it out) goal on the run in the last half, Grant, Mikey and Jacko running all day, Olley starring at half back, the youthful Epperson bros, Asa walking back into a pack, putting his body on the line taking a very courageous mark and all the rookies who had fantastic games first time up.
Following the game DB provided two kegs of his local brew that helped with the warm down. A big thank you to DB for taking us on a tour of his brewery and hosting the post-match function at Fassler Hall. A special mention to the Cramps for finishing the day how he started it! Trying to give up the days takings but with help from the local driver service in the carpark!
It was a fantastic team effort with everyone contributing to the great win. If we commit our minds and body to the great game of Australia Rules, get to training and keep fit, the Dallas Magpies will be a very hard team to beat this year.
